Triple Champion Cariad's Kutya Kai Costa

We are reprinting and paraphrasing portions of an article that was written by Nick Portantiere for the Staten Island Advance newspaper, 29 October 1980. Paraphrasing was done by Patty Mead for length. We are grateful to the dog's owner for allowing us to reprint the pictures.

Like many of us, Robert and Marianne Costa's wonder dog started out as a pet. But as the owners started to see how fun it was to compete they went for it -- with gusto!

Kutya became a Champion in 1976 and attained his field championship a year later.

The last week of October 1980 entered their dog in an Obedience Trial, and left with the first triple champion in the AKC's history. Not bad for seven year old Kutya. But Kutya's awards and accomplishments set the standard for Vizslas to come. He was the first obedience trial champion Vizla, the first obedience trial champion on Staten Island, and the number 1 obedience Vizsla for 1978 through 1980.

He was the number 5 obedience sporting dog for 1979 (the first Vizsla to ever place in this elite category). He was the highest scoring dog in trial at the 1979 VCA nationals. BUt also, he was the first Vizsla to ever place in Superdog competition when he took sixth palce at the Gaines Eastern Regionals in Philadelphia in 1979.

For those interested, the sire was CH Glen Cottage Loki Barat CDX and dam was CH Cariad's Gaybine (breeders Linda Greenfield and Marion Coffman).
